Optimus Polaris Optifuel Black Edition review

One-burner remote multi-fuel stove with Optimus EN 417 canister and pumped liquid-fuel arrangements. The exact Black Edition fact sheet lists 330 g without the pump and 475 g with it; the shared Polaris manual caps cookware at 220 mm / 8.5 inches and requires the fuel container to stay outside its approved windscreen.

A useful fit for

A technically confident cook who needs one remote burner that can use the exact Optimus EN 417 canister system or the manual's pumped petroleum-fuel modes, and accepts the 330 g bare-burner minimum plus pump, bottle and maintenance steps. The manufacturer manual sets an 8.5-inch cookware maximum and a 25 mm screen gap; no exact US price or offer is asserted.

The main tradeoff

This is heavier and more procedural than a simple canister burner, and the exact official gas-power figures conflict. The German/English product page says unavailable in that region; no live US stock, package inventory beyond the listed accessories or exact Amazon listing is claimed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

How is the Black Edition different from standard Polaris 8019229?

It is a distinct SKU, 8020428, with its own official fact sheet and black-finish product identity, not a basis for merging technical numbers with SKU 8019229. Its fact sheet lists 5,300 W gas output while the linked manual lists 3,300 W canister gas; the conflict is explicit and the matcher uses no output figure.

Which fuel setups are documented for SKU 8020428?

The English manual supports Optimus threaded EN 417 canisters up to 450 g and a separately pumped Optimus-bottle mode using the listed petroleum fuels. It does not establish compatibility with MSR 80/20, Jetboil JetPower, alcohol fuel, arbitrary bottles or adapters.

What cookware and windscreen rules apply?

The Polaris manual allows no cookware over 220 mm / 8.5 inches or 4 kg combined pan and food. If using the Optimus windscreen, preserve a 25 mm / 1-inch gap, fit it after lighting and keep the canister or fuel bottle outside its perimeter.

Is the 8020428 light enough to meet a 300 g burner cap?

No. The exact Black Edition fact sheet lists 330 g without the pump and 475 g with it. Neither number includes the full fueled cook system, and the 330 g minimum already exceeds the finder's 300 g maximum.

Research-based review · exact model: SKU 8020428

The Polaris Optifuel Black Edition is the black-finish 8020428 configuration of Optimus’s remote multi-fuel burner, not simply a reason to copy every number from standard SKU 8019229. Its manufacturer fact sheet gives it a distinct item number and GTIN, and—importantly—its gas-output figure conflicts with the linked Polaris manual. This is a source-based assessment of the exact edition, not a hands-on review or a claim that a US retailer currently has it.

A separate SKU with a real source conflict

Optimus identifies item 8020428 as Polaris Optifuel Black Edition. The official fact sheet lists 5,300 W for gas and 4,200 W for liquid fuel; the English manual linked from the exact product page lists 3,300 W for canister gas and 4,200 W for white gas. The product page itself shows an unqualified 4,200 W specification. These are not interchangeable readings: the manufacturer sources do not establish one settled canister-mode output, so this review and the finder leave that value unclaimed. The conflict is also why a black finish is not enough to merge this item with standard 8019229.

The German/English manufacturer page identifies the exact 8020428 item and GTIN but says the product is unavailable in that region. The recorded Stoves collection also showed the card. That establishes the product identity, not a live US offer, price or stock. Check the precise SKU and local sale package before buying.

Fuel flexibility is useful only if you accept the procedure

This is a single remote burner with distinct gas and pumped-liquid arrangements. For canister use, the manual calls for an Optimus threaded EN 417 cartridge up to 450 g. The exact ratio of the Optimus blend is not stated here, so a threaded valve alone does not establish compatibility with MSR 80/20 or Jetboil JetPower. Use the manual’s named fuel and connection rather than assuming that a similar-looking cartridge or adapter is interchangeable.

The liquid-fuel route uses an Optimus bottle and the stove’s pump with the manual’s named petroleum fuels: white gas, unleaded fuel, kerosene, diesel or jet fuel. The instructions do not support alcohol, mixed fuels or improvised bottles. This arrangement entails filling only to the marked line, pumping to pressure, preheating and checking connections for leaks. The fact sheet lists the FLIPSTOP pump and service tools among accessories, but verify the seller’s exact package rather than treating a photo or accessory list as a complete box inventory.

Gas mode has a separate four-season procedure. For inverted liquid-feed use, the manual says to start with the canister upright and let the flame run for 30 seconds before slowly turning it over. It warns about flare-ups during the change. That is a method to learn from the exact instructions, not a shortcut to a published minimum operating temperature. In freezing conditions, the Polaris manual also warns that O-rings may stiffen and leak.

Cookware and windscreen limits are part of the match

The shared English Polaris manual sets a ceiling of 220 mm (8.5 inches) for cookware and 4 kg for the combined pan and food. Those are limits, not a guarantee that every pot base, handle and load will sit safely over a flexible hose and remote burner. The manual permits the Optimus windscreen arrangement: adjust it to the pot, retain a 25 mm (1-inch) air gap and keep the canister or fuel bottle outside the screen. It also says to fit the windscreen only after lighting and not to use a non-Optimus screen or heat reflector.

Weight is another reason not to treat the product photo as a full camp kitchen. The exact Black Edition sheet lists 330 g without the pump and 475 g with it. Liquid-fuel use depends on the pump; a bottle, fuel, cookware and packed accessories add more, and no total carry mass is published. At 330 g bare, the burner already exceeds this finder’s 300 g maximum. There is no documented integrated piezo starter, so plan for an external lighting tool.

Who should consider it?

The Black Edition makes sense only when the ability to use the documented canister and liquid-fuel modes solves a real resupply or cold-weather problem—and you are prepared to carry and maintain that equipment. If your routine is one uncomplicated canister and a small pot, a lighter stove may be simpler. If you do want this fuel flexibility, the most useful comparison is not the finish: verify the correct cartridge, bottle, pump and screen setup, then read the manual for each operating mode.

Optimus publishes conditional figures of about four minutes per liter on gas and 3.4 minutes on liquid fuel, with up to 105 minutes from a 230 g canister or 100 minutes from 400 ml of liquid fuel at full output. Climate, altitude, fuel and setup matter; these are manufacturer estimates, not independent boil tests. The exact US retail package and availability remain unconfirmed, and no price or Amazon listing is asserted here.
