A useful fit for

A one-burner propane basecamp stove for a cook who values adjustable heat, an included 9-inch pan and the option to link into a compatible JetLink cooking range.

The main tradeoff

The included screen and regulator do not make this an EN417 canister stove; the disposable propane source is separate, the 5 L FluxPot and JetLink hose are not included, the stove is one burner only, and no general cookware diameter or strict minimum mass is documented.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can HalfGen join a two-or-more-burner cooking arrangement?

HalfGen itself is one burner. Its manual describes a JetLink output for compatible stove/accessory expansion, but a compatible host and the exact JetLink hose are separate equipment; this HALFGEN package is not a multi-burner bundle.

What fuel and boil-water claims apply to the exact HalfGen package?

The manual specifies a 16.4 oz disposable propane cylinder, sold separately, or a separately purchased certified bulk-tank hose adapter. Jetboil publishes a 3 min 15 sec per liter claim using its 5 L FluxRing pot, which is not included; it is manufacturer-published, not an independent test.

Can I demand a 9-inch maximum pot and a separate windscreen?

The package includes a 9-inch fry pan and its manual allows only the supplied screen with a one-inch gap. The exact sources do not give a general maximum pot diameter, so the included pan does not prove that 9 inches is a supported maximum for other cookware.

Assessment scope: the current US black HalfGen stove package, item HALFGEN, UPC 0858941006540. This is the one-burner appliance and its supplied cookware/accessories, not the separate Genesis Basecamp System, a Genesis/HalfGen multi-stove bundle, or the Luna burner add-on. This is a source-based assessment, not a hands-on review or boil-time test.

A standalone burner that can also join a larger basecamp layout

HalfGen is a one-position cooking station with a foldable stove body, regulator, grate, drip tray, product-specific windscreen, carry bag and 9-inch ceramic-coated fry pan. It is described as usable alone or as one unit in a connected JetLink arrangement. That makes it a different proposition from the Genesis Basecamp Stove: Genesis has two burner positions in its chassis, while HalfGen contributes one. A larger group layout comes from linking separately identified stoves with the compatible JetLink hose, not from treating this single burner as a hidden three-burner appliance.

The exact HalfGen package has a useful pan ready to cook with, but the listing does not establish a general maximum diameter for every pot or pan. The manufacturer says it is compatible with the 5-liter FluxPot, which is not in the box. A listed 9-inch fry pan is an included-item fact, not a manual-backed promise that any 9-inch vessel—or any larger one—will sit safely over the burner. The opened grate and windscreen clearances, cookware shape and exact instructions still matter.

Propane is a different fuel decision from JetPower

The North America HalfGen manual specifies propane under vapor pressure and names a 16.4-ounce disposable propane cylinder, sold separately. It also permits a separately sold bulk-tank hose adapter meeting the listed ANSI/CSA certification. Jetboil's FAQ identifies a 1/4-inch female NPT fuel inlet for its Basecamp stove family. The supplied HalfGen regulator and exact manual define the intended setup; a familiar threaded cartridge or an improvised adapter is not a substitute. In particular, HalfGen is not an EN417 JetPower canister stove, even though JetPower also contains propane as one ingredient.

JetLink is an expansion port, not another ordinary fuel inlet. A compatible separately purchased hose links the HalfGen output to a maker-certified stove or accessory; the product page names Genesis and other compatible JetLink equipment. The hose is not in this HalfGen package. If the goal is simply one cooking position, HalfGen can be assessed as a standalone stove. If the goal is shared-fuel multi-burner cooking, confirm the host model, required hose, every linked component's instructions and exact package contents before choosing the system.

Adjustable output is documented, not independently tested

Jetboil lists a 10,000-BTU-per-hour burner and describes the regulator as adjustable from light simmer to full boil. The manual describes reducing the flame after lighting. These manufacturer statements support an adjustable-output classification; they do not tell us how a particular sauce behaves at low flame or establish a laboratory simmer result. The maker publishes a 3-minute-15-second-per-liter figure using a 5-liter FluxRing pot and an average over the life of a one-pound propane cylinder. That cookware is not included, and the time and fuel-use statements are manufacturer claims rather than independent measurements.

The product page describes regulated performance down to 20°F (-6°C), while the manual gives a minimum use temperature of 0°F (-20°C). These are not the same statement: the first is a performance description, the second a manual operating boundary. Neither is a promise of identical flame behavior in all weather, recipes, wind or fuel conditions.

Its supplied screen is the only approved screen

HalfGen's manual calls for outdoor use in a well-ventilated area, on a flat and level surface at least 1 meter (3.3 feet) from combustibles and ignition sources. It permits only the windscreen supplied with this exact stove and requires at least a 1-inch gap from that screen to cookware; another screen or an outback oven can overheat the fuel cylinder. Therefore an approved-screen match means the model-specific supplied screen arrangement, not permission to add a different shield. The cylinder must remain upright.

Before lighting, the instructions call for checking the gasket and seals and leak-testing connections outdoors with soapy water, never a flame. Keep cookware off the grate while igniting, do not move or tilt the lit stove, and disconnect fuel after use. Let the equipment cool before packing. These are material fit limits, not optional accessories or proof of indoor suitability.

Weight, footprint and the decision to carry a second burner

Jetboil lists 3 pounds 8 ounces (1.6 kilograms) and explicitly excludes the regulator, windscreen and carry bag from that system-weight figure. It is not labeled as a minimum or a package-complete carrying weight, so this assessment does not use it for a strict minimum-weight match. The packed figures are 9.4 by 3.9 inches, with the maker not naming the axes. Add the separate propane source and the rest of the meal kit when planning transport; this is a substantial basecamp setup compared with a tiny canister burner.

HalfGen may suit a cook who wants one adjustable propane burner, a ready-to-use 9-inch pan and the option to expand a compatible JetLink kitchen. It is a weaker fit if the essential requirement is a standard threaded backpacking canister, a verified maximum pan diameter, two burners in this package, or a lightweight stove-only mass. Check the exact HALFGEN identity, included regulator and screen, separately supplied propane, and whether a JetLink hose is actually needed. Read the complete current North America manual before use; this review does not replace it.
