Setup
Set up a stove without guessing at its safety limits
Open-flame cooking outdoors carries fire, burn and carbon-monoxide risks. The safe setup is model-specific, so these steps are a prompt to read the full manual—not a replacement for it. Stop if any part, seal, fuel container or operating condition is uncertain.
Before connecting fuel
Identify the exact stove and cartridge or bottle. Check the instructions for the approved fuel, fitting and connector, then inspect seals and threads for damage. Do not overtighten a connection, force an adapter or operate a stove that leaks or behaves unexpectedly. The PocketRocket Deluxe manual says to check for leaks with soapy water, never with a flame, and to use the fuel container specified for that model.
The Switch System manual specifies MSR 80/20 fuel certified to EN 417, requires the plastic nesting bowl to be removed before the Switch Pot is placed on its burner, and prohibits an external windscreen. Read its exact canister-support conditions rather than applying a related MSR model's limits.
For a Reactor, manual #34-434 specifies the threaded 80/20 MSR blend and Reactor cookware only, prohibits a windscreen, reflector or diffuser, and warns against an unstable or uneven setup. The manual says to operate it outdoors, not to move the hot stove, and to let the stove cool before handling. Its thermal shutoff is an overheat safeguard, not a user repair instruction; if it trips or operation is abnormal, stop and use the exact troubleshooting guidance rather than trying to bypass it.
Choose an appropriate outdoor surface
Use a firm, level surface with space around the appliance and cookware. Remove combustible material from the cooking area and follow the model manual's exact distances. Do not cook inside a tent, vehicle, camper, home or other enclosure unless the exact appliance is explicitly designed and approved for that use. The PocketRocket Deluxe manual warns that its open flame can produce odorless carbon monoxide and limits it to outdoor use.
Keep the fuel container within its limits
Use only the container type, size and orientation approved for the exact arrangement. Observe any required canister stand, remote adapter or pot restriction. Never surround a stove with an improvised windscreen. If you smell fuel, see a leak or find a damaged seal, stop; follow the manual's response instructions and move away from ignition sources as directed.
Stay with the flame
Keep children and pets clear, keep your face and body away from the burner during lighting, and never leave a hot or burning stove unattended. Do not move it while burning or hot. The PocketRocket Deluxe manual requires at least five minutes of cooling before moving and says there are no user-serviceable parts. Another stove may have a different procedure.
After cooking
Turn off the stove as instructed, allow it to cool, disconnect or store fuel as directed by the manufacturer, and keep containers away from heat and ignition. Follow local disposal guidance for empty fuel containers. Before a trip, read the troubleshooting and maintenance sections for your exact model rather than disassembling a burner based on a video for a different stove.
These are not exhaustive safety instructions. Read the current manufacturer's warnings, inspect the equipment and seek qualified instruction if you are not comfortable operating a stove.
